Epilog

By September 1, 1968, following the ultimate full adoption of the Flexnerian principles to which we have referred, Stanford Medical School had reached a level of maturity and stability that assured its continued growth and evolution in the years ahead - years during which the teaching, research and clinical programs of the School would be increasingly science-oriented, diverse and productive.

Other significant events on or related to September 1, 1968 include the following:

  1. Retirement of President J. E. Wallace Sterling.

  2. Appointment of Dean Robert J. Glaser as Acting President of the University.

  3. The year 1968 was the 110th anniversary of the founding in 1858 of the original Predecessor School, the Medical Department of the University of the Pacific; and the 60th anniversary of the transfer of Cooper Medical College to Stanford University in 1908.

  4. Now, in recognition that Stanford Medical School had by September 1 1968 entered a new era, we conclude on that date these memoirs of the previous 110 years (1858 - 1968) featuring the birth and development of Stanford Medical School and its Predecessor Schools.

"An Historical Perspective" May our special interest in exploring the historical background of individuals, institutions and events related to the origin and evolution of these schools, and our in-depth consideration of relevant themes in medical and world history, serve to broaden the scope and interest of our inquiry

May this chronicle for the period 1858 to 1968 encourage an early recording of the ensuing impressive annals of the School.
